The Sons of Katie Elder is a 1965 Western, starring John Wayne and Dean Martin. The plot concerns the eponymous four sons of Katie Elder, who return to their hometown of Clearwater, Texas, after their mother dies. None of them are particularly successful; John is a Gunslinger, Tom is a gambler, Matt is a failed hardware store owner, and Bud is a hot-headed 17-year-old who has refused to go to college. Despite this, they vow to take care of Katie’s last few affairs and move on with their lives. However, they discover that during their absence, their father died under suspicious circumstances and their mother was forced off the family ranch into a small homestead to live in poverty.

The film The Alamo depicts the Battle of the Alamo and the events leading up to it. Sam Houston leads the forces fighting for Texas independence and needs time to build an army. The opposing Mexican forces, led by General Santa Anna, are numerically stronger and also better armed and trained. Nevertheless, the Texans have spirit and morale remains generally high.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is a 1976 American revisionist Western  film set during and after the American Civil War. It was directed by and starred Clint Eastwood (as the eponymous Josey Wales). The film tells the story of Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose family is murdered by Union militants during the Civil War. Driven to revenge, Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla band and fights in the Civil War. After the war, all the fighters in Wales' group except for Wales surrender to Union officers, but they end up being massacred. Wales becomes an outlaw and is pursued by bounty hunters and Union soldiers.

When violent conflict breaks out between greedy railroaders and a tribe of Mescalero Apaches, only two men, destined to be blood brothers, can prevent all-out war: chief's son Winnetou and German engineer Old Shatterhand. The action takes place in the U.S. Southwest, in the latter half of the 1800s, where the Indian way of life is threatened by the first transcontinental railroad. Winnetou, the only Native Indian chief who could have united the various rival tribes to reach a settlement with the whites, is murdered. His tragic death foreshadows the death of his people. The central theme here is the relationship between aggression, racism, and religious intolerance.

In Cahill, U.S. Marshal (1973), John Wayne plays a widowed law officer who spends his time tracking down criminals instead of raising his two sons. The boys, Danny, 17, and Billy Joe, 12, turn to crime as a way to get their father's attention. They eventually try to go straight, but the outlaw they are involved with, Abe Fraser, refuses to let them go. It's up to Cahill to rescue his sons and bring Fraser to justice.
