Although the Traditional Ballad Index lists the author of Bring Me Little Water Sylvy as unknown, it was primarily credited to Lead Belly.
Huddie Ledbetter (1888 –1949) was an American folk and blues musician notable for his strong vocals, virtuosity on the twelve-string guitar, and the folk standards he introduced. He is best known as Lead Belly. Though many releases credit him as "Leadbelly", he himself wrote it as "Lead Belly".
Bring me little water Silvy is a folk song of North America. Lead Belly’s Uncle Bob Ledbetter had a wife named Silvy. When he was out plowing with his mules he would often shout at Silvie to bring him some water. After a long time this holler developed into a little song.
